'What on earth is going on in the House of Commons?!'

From PM and Her Majesty one week, to a new PM and King the next... Let's chat

September, September. What a month in British history. On the 8th of September, the nation mourned the tragic loss of Queen Elizabeth II; for many, the only monarch they had seen rule. The proceedings after her death, such as state funeral on the 19th of September were poignant moments in British history, leaving the nation feeling rather unstable. This is not only due to the absence of Her Majesty, but also a Prime Minister. On the 6th of September, two days before the Queens' passing, Boris Johnson, our Conservative Prime Minster resigned. This was the result of many outlying factors over his rule as PM. Here are a few words from his speech:

"I regret not to have been successful in those arguments and of course it is painful not being able to see through so many ideas...myself. But, as we have seen at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves."- Boris Johnson

After this speech, many of the public, echoing his own words, may have felt 'relief' or on the opposing end, 'disappointment'. However, this was not the end of the race yet.

After the 'battle' to become the new Conservative PM, Liz Truss soon became the new leader. Following protocol she was selected by the party M.Ps, the public had no part in this process. Some members of public along with MPs from her own party felt disappointment with many of Truss' policies and ideas, especially those centred around taxationansd her wish to reduce the rate of tax for top income earners, encouraging 'innovation' and more investment. Would these ideas work? How would it benefit the working classes who are struggling with spiralling costs? In the past, other leaders, around the World such as Ronald Reagan, previous US president, wished to carry out something similar; however, economically, this idea was a failure.

45 days of Truss in office, the dreaded resignation speech re-appeared on TV's and radios around the UK. Truss had resigned after less than two months in power, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. It was believed by many that due to her failed attempt at introducing the ill timed 'mini-budget' and the fear of forthcoming recession in the UK (due to factors like high energy prices and Brexit etc), she decided to go.

So for the moment, we await the coronation of our new King next year, the role of Prime Minister remains open; The British Government faces further turmoil....but hold the front page, a new leader is before us Rishi Sunak but in the words of Boris:

"No one is remotely indispensible."- Boris Johnson
